Welcome to the PowerShell GitHub Community! PowerShell Core is a cross-platform (Windows, Linux, and macOS) automation and configuration tool/framework that works well with your existing tools and is optimized for dealing with structured data (e.g. JSON, CSV, XML, etc.), REST APIs, and object models. Download PowerShell for free. Command-line shell and scripting language built on.NET. Powershell is a cross-platform, task-based command-line shell and scripting language that helps rapidly automate tasks that manage operating systems (Linux, macOS and Windows) and processes. It works well with existing tools and is optimized for dealing with structured data, REST APIs and object models. For a list of the supported Linux versions and for information about how to install PowerShell Core 6.0 or later on a Linux-based computer, see Installing PowerShell Core on Linux on Microsoft's website. Some Linux-based operating systems, such as Arch, Kali, and Raspbian, are not officially supported, but have varying levels of community support. What is PowerShell Core? The next release of PowerShell (6.0) was open-sourced last year and is currently in beta. However, it is PowerShell Core designed to run cross-platform on Windows, Mac, and Linux. PowerShell Core runs on top of.NET Core, a cross-platform, open-source version of the code base powering most of the Windows world. While PowerShell Core 6 was focusing on bringing cross-platform compatibility, PowerShell 7 will focus on making it a viable replacement for Windows PowerShell 5.1 and bringing near parity with Windows PowerShell. Here is how you can install and update PowerShell 7 on Windows and Linux using a simple one-liner.
August 22, 2016 It’s a weird thing to say, but we can install PowerShell on Mac after the announcement from Microsoft that PowerShell will be available for both Macintosh and Linux. It’s pretty easy to accomplish but having a great scripting language like PowerShell available for Mac is really cool and deserves a blog post. I mean, now I don’t even need to fire up my Windows virtual machine just to run PowerShell!
To get started, download the OSX .pkg file from the github page: https://github.com/PowerShell/PowerShell/releases/
Once the file is downloaded you’ll need to find the download and right click and choose open. This will start the installation process.
Click Next on the Introduction Page.
Select the Destination Disk and click Next.
Select the installation location and click Install.
Enter in the administrative credentials to install the software and click Install Software.
When the installation is finished click Close.

Once the install is complete, open a Terminal Window and run “powershell”. Once you do this, you’ll be able to execute PowerShell commands. The example below I ran “get-host” to find the PowerShell version that was installed. I will note that the Install-Module commands don’t work quite yet so adding things like PowerCLI and AzureRM modules won’t be super easy to accomplish yet. This will probably change soon. After all, this is a very early release.
